Welcome

Lutheran World Service India (LWSI), an International Non Government Organization, is the country programme of the Lutheran World Federation/
Department for World Service, Geneva, Switzerland, which acts on behalf of the communion of Lutheran Churches worldwide.

The main objective of LWSI is to empower women and men of disadvantaged communities to enhance their quality of life by cultivating self reliance. LWSI has
been implementing Disaster Response, Disaster Preparedness and Integrated Development Projects for more than three decades.

 |
Disaster Response
Various
LWSI projects are ongoing in response to
natural and human made disasters like the
tsunami in Tamil Nadu, floods in Orissa
and West Bengal, and ethnic violence in
Assam.

Community Based Disaster Preparedness
LWSI
trains local communities in flood and
cyclone prone areas to mitigate the
effects of future disasters and organizes
Disaster Mitigation Teams. The project is
functional in coastal Orissa and Tamil
Nadu.

| Integrated Development |
| LWSI
Integrated Development Projects are
implemented in both rural and urban areas.
LWSI has adopted the rights based approach
to development, and hence
"empowerment" and
"entitlement" are the two
factors that guide its work. The objective
is to "create enabling conditions for
men and women to secure their rights and
achieve greater control over their lives
and livelihoods by facilitating their
participation in sustainable development

Rural Development
LWSI
works with the landless and vulnerable
communities living at subsistence level.
Majority of the families belong to the
traditionally marginalized groups. The
project operates in two states: West
Bengal (3 districts) and Orissa (7
districts). |

Urban Development
LWSI
works with dwellers of slums and squatter
settlements, consisting of refugees from
neighbouring countries and migrants from
rural areas. The project continues in
Kolkata (West Bengal), Cuttack and
Bhubaneswar (Orissa). |
