Projects - India Floods < Back to Project
Over 1,800 people lost their lives in the 2007 floods in India and more than 30 million people were affected by flooding in the states of Assam, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Tens of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes and take shelter in temporary camps and on higher ground. The first floods occurred in many parts of the country during the first week of July 2007 and since then there have been repeated floods of varying severity, especially in Orissa and West Bengal. The families who were affected by these repeated floods lived in appalling conditions on the embankments, road sides and higher grounds as well as in relief camps. Most of the affected are poor families who were forced to depend on assistance from the government or relief organizations and NGOs.

Impact on human lives
More than 25 million people were affected in the states of Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. Normalcy was disrupted and the day to day activity of the flood affected people during the busy agriculture season came to a stand still. All other livelihood activities also ceased. The flood caused partial/ complete damage to the mud houses. Safe drinking water was not available and health, hygiene and sanitation were matters of serious concern. Damaged houses and crops and loss of livelihoods compounded problems manifold in the following months.

LWSI intervention
LWSI is working in three states: Orissa - Balasore district (relief and rehabilitation); West Bengal - West Midnapore district (relief and rehabilitation) and Bihar - East Champaran district (relief assistance).

Relief assistance comprises dry food rations, clothing and sleeping materials, water purification and sanitation materials, and temporary shelter. Rehabilitation interventions include construction and/or repair of community infrastructures through Food for Work projects; material assistance for construction and/or renovation of flood damaged houses; seeds for farmers to replant crops; awareness programmes on community based disaster preparedness, and construction of flood shelters.

The implementation period for LWSI is July 2007 to the end of July 2008.
